Board Games in the Office
Weird Board Games at Work
Short Story by Elliott
So this thing has been going on in my life I thought I’d share with you. It’s kind of weird but I’ll just go ahead and tell you anyways.
You see my boss at work has been playing this game with my team that was supposed to be fun and help everyone bond a bit better but it’s kind of been going on longer than I think it should.
The deal is she has this board game that’s kind of like Cards Against Humanity meets Risk and what happens in this game is a virus, yeah I know a virus is unleashed on all the players and they have to figure out how to handle it by drawing cards. They say things like “lockdown” and “socially distanced museum visits”, and so on.
We’d leave the board as is and would only play it on our breaks and sometimes after work too. We thought it’d be over after a few months but it went on into the summer which was kind of weird.
By Christmas we knew something was up with our boss as she kept insisting we play. That’s when she decided to unlock the “Vaccine Cards” which perked things up a bit but it didn’t last long when we realized how slowly these cards get dished out. It’s been almost a year and she just bought an expansion pack called “Variant” and while that seems kind of fun, the issue is we’re tired of the game and don’t want to play any more.
We’ll probably go along with the variant challenges but after that we‘re going to bring it up at the next union meeting because it’s not fair. Anyways thankfully everyone’s playing fairly and we haven’t lost our minds yet. Will keep you updated about it.

Back on Planet Earth, this week we celebrate the life of Chick Corea, one of the most talented and accomplished musicians of all time who recently died at the age of 79. His body of work in jazz is so extensive, but one must begin with the song Spain which I included in this week’s Four Track Snack Pack.
I was lucky enough to see his fusion band Return to Forever in a reunion concert a few years ago. His last statement to fans is an inspirational message:
I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.
Thank you Chick.

Here’s a fun noodle to perk up your Sunday.
Four Track Snack Pack
I start this playlist off with a swing tune because I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to music of the 30s and 40s lately.
While a lot of the top-charting songs were under the umbrella of swing, you can hear that pop music of any era has some themes that never expire, such as clear melodies, upbeat rhythms or melancholy lyrics.
Lullaby of Broadway - Dorsey Brothers & Bing Crosby
Spain - Chick Corea
Elephant - The Sorcerers
Train on the Island - Hazel Dickens

Wishing you a great Sunday ahead with lots of bagels and no strange card games please.
