Something that comes to mind today is the “re-mind-er”; just being here now is enough.
When it’s time to depart from this form that we’ve taken, almost everything will be the same as when you first got here.
Sure, we didn’t have ChatGPT when I was a small child, but I think the entrance of computers into the home was just as revolutionary. Things that used to take up the size of a room were now just an everyday appliance.
The loud and craggy dot matrix printer allowed for school assignments to be done at home, mixing the tidiness of a typewriter with the editing ability of a calculator.
And back to me and you, the world will always be in flux, and there’s no predicting who or what circumstances you will be born in when the cosmic coin toss drops to the ground.
The question is what will you do with everything that you have at your disposal? Will you complain about it like many people around you do? Or will you do everything you can, with everything you’ve got, right in this moment?
The great rock guitarists were known for their internal catalog of riffs. They are invented, borrrowed and stolen amongst these legends. And they learned how to wring every last drop out of these riffs and licks, finding homes for them in various songs and solos. You learn the riff in every key, up and down the neck.
Your life situation is the catalog of riffs you were born with. It’s up to you to decide how you will put them to use.
Yet beneath the life situation is life itself. Behind every interaction or desire you have in your day, there is always an underlying layer of reality.
We often don’t see that reality, maybe only early in the day when it’s quiet or late at night before you retire.
That quietness is where we came from before we were born, and where we’re going after we die.
A great use of the second half of your life would be to connect with that quiet space and get to know it intimately so you can live without the fear of going there one day.
