This week on Elliott’s Podcast I discuss the sometimes vague influence that the Grateful Dead has had on my life. This is done by examining a night when I was ‘slingshotted’ into a vortex in America, so you’ll have to listen to find out what that means.
Thanks to Jordin for making a brief appearance, as well as Adam who let me know about the Relisten app and helped me pick out the Alpine Valley show from 1989 that you hear in the background.
Questions for discussion:
What was the impact of the Grateful Dead on your life?
Have they made absolutely no impact on your life?
If you are a Dead fan, what is your favourite show that you can link to in the comments?
If you are not a Dead fan, who is the biggest Dead fan that you know of? Are they still able to count from 1 to 10 without missing any numbers?
Four Track Snack Pack
I heard this Dinah Washington song What a Difference A Day Makes on the radio this week and I was just floored by how beautiful it is. I also included a track by Vulfpeck who are sort of leading the charge on funky jam bands these days.
What a Difference A Day Makes - Dinah Washington
Let’s Go Let’s Go Let’s Go - Hank Ballard
I Ain’t Never - Webb Pierce

Slingshotted into an American Vortex
Elliot! I am so glad to have finally tuned into your podcast. I don't see you getting a smoothie sponsorship. Maybe Kombucha, or whatever drink we will all be into in about 5 years time.
Questions for discussion:
What was the impact of the Grateful Dead on your life? I'd say very impactful. Now oddly enough, I don't think I've listened to that much Dead. I do recall getting my first ever Dead Tape from a lovely young lad who's name I can't recall. My favourite t shirt that I have ever heard is a Dead shirt that Adam Brody gave to me. It has hundreds of holes in it, but I love wearing it more than anything. I also think of other dear friends like Steve Bannet, or Marc Gertner who embody the spirit of the Grateful Dead.
Have they made absolutely no impact on your life? see above.
If you are a Dead fan, what is your favourite show that you can link to in the comments? Jai Alai or something like that. It was the first tape given to me. I think it's in Florida. I sadly don't have the tape anymore so I'm not sure where they played. There was a killer Dark Star, Space and Drums on it. I couldn't believe that musicians were doing this sort of thing. I was brought up on classical music, which has so many rules. I also listened to a ton of old rock, which had rules around length of time it could be played. My Dad used to accuse me of smoking pot when I put on his Floyd records. I didn't even know what Pot was when he made those accusations. I didn't need grass, it was the most amazing musical time of my life. Just being able to use the record player was a privilege, let alone the chance to listen to such expansive music. Now I'm off track aren't I.
If you are not a Dead fan, who is the biggest Dead fan that you know of? Are they still able to count from 1 to 10 without missing any numbers? Steve Bannet, Marc Gertner, Adam Brody, Rob Trager, BJ Nathan. I love you Elliot. Thanks for making some engaging content!
I enjoyed listening to this podcast. I even giggled at some moments!
