I almost didn’t record this week’s podcast as all the cylinders are firing. I asked what use is it for me to be playing my ambient music when the world falls back into its default mode of chaos?
Even as I was hesitantly setting up the gear, Teddy the dog managed to put a small chip on my guitar by throwing his cushion at it. Not really a big deal but you can see how a small little incident could set you off even further.
And yet, I understood deep down this work does have a use in the world, and there is a purpose behind this practice of sitting down to record these sounds.
This practice is starting to have a name in my life, and that is “Sit Down and Ambient”. Even if I work on more upbeat styles of music throughout the week, this Sit Down and Ambient is my way of resetting or setting a restore point in my internal computer.
So I left the video cameras off and recorded anyways. The result is quite nice to just focus on the abstract visuals that you can see below.
Every week I continue to cultivate ways of spending quality time with the listener as best I can, in a format that is static and not in front of a “live studio audience” as they used to say on TV.
When faced with some sort of block or challenge, always ask yourself, “what does the art want?”. This requires you to put yourself aside for a bit and continue to do the work. If you don’t make “art”, you just substitute your version of your most important work here.
Also listen on other podcast channels.
Sending my hopes of peace to Ukraine, and to all my friends who are from this region my thoughts are with you in this difficult time.
