This week I had a dream involving a fat, chunky boa constrictor slithering around a tree, and then I was taken out of harm’s way by a tiger that came along and attacked it. I consulted with
1 about this one and she helped me sort through some of the contours of this experience. The most important takeaway I have to share with you is that fear is the snake and your creative spirit is the tiger.I feel like this is a good message these days in times of stress for many. Fear is checking the news and worrying about what you see. Courage is sitting down to play guitar no matter what. The snake is the voice that tells you it will never work out, and the tiger is the spirit that says give it a shot.
Sometimes I find myself in the music store, and I want something new. I will go home and think about it, and oftentimes convince myself that I can’t afford it. Be weary of the times when you starve your inner artist.
It’s not just about spending money on your craft, but more about carving out the time for it. You might feel guilty about closing the proverbial door to your workspace, but it’s essential to your wellbeing. I believe this applies just as much to people who play sports too.
Any hobby is a form of making art. In the event of a plane crash, you have to put your life vest on before helping others. Fill your cup and keep it full as much as you can. Doing what you’re called to do is not selfish. It’s essential.
Here are some ideas for your week ahead:
Consider the idea of rigour and hard work. While hustle culture is cancelled, I think there’s always an element of grit in getting creative work done. Sometimes it’s just a 30-minute session that ticks this box off. An hour is ideal and bless yourself if you can do an hour and a half2.
Happiness is a choice. When faced with a stressful situation, tell yourself that you choose joy in this moment.
What is your secret recipe? What do you do differently than everyone else? Your secret recipe will be found out eventually and that’s ok because you will always do it better than the imitators.
What is your shtick in life? My favourite shtick is Kramer on Seinfeld. Do you have weird hair and burst in the door unannounced? Michael Jackson’s was the perfect dance moves followed by grabbing his crotch.
How can you “earn interest” on your interests?3 I like to think that one day we can be remunerated for the hard work we do behind the scenes. It’s not to be expected or demanded, but it would be nice if it happens.
What games can you play to make your work more exciting? A game is just an activity that has constraints, and you find something that can be measured to keep score.
Power is held when you are detached from the results of any situation. Are you willing to do creative work and not be pushed around by your sensitivities?
Ok I am off to pick up some bagels. I’m glad we had this chat today. Share this post if you enjoyed it. Leave a comment if anything resonated with you.
My next workshop is on Tuesday night at 7pm EST for people who are interested in starting a newsletter like this one on Substack. Registration is free and it will run for just over an hour.
See you next week,
Elliott
